Abanindranath was born in Jorasanko, Calcutta on 7 August 1871. His father Gunendranath was the son of Girindranath, the second son of Dwarkanath Tagore. Abanindranath's first formal training in pastel, watercolour and lifestudy was under the supervision of his private tutor, Signor Gilhardi. He attended the studio of Charles Palmer, an English painter, for instructions in oil paintings and portraiture. In 1895 he painted the Krishna-Lila series, which display a unique blend of both European and Indian, styles. E.B.Havell, Principal, Calcutta School of Art, on seeing these paintings was impressed and offered Abanindranath the post of Vice-principal of the School. Under Havell' s guidance he studied Mughal and Rajput styles of painting thoroughly. |

India's most important, and famous, modern artist Francis Newton Souza, who has died aged 77 was of a generation whose creative roots remained anchored securely and authentically to the expressive modernism inspired by Picasso. Born in the Portuguese Catholic colony of Goa, Souza was brought up by his mother, a dressmaker. In 1929 after the family moved to Bombay, he survived smallpox - and his mother added the name Francis as a mark of respect to Goa's patron saint St Francis Xavier. Having been expelled from schools in 1937 and 1939, he entered the Sir JJ school of art in Bombay in 1940 (now Mumbai) where he was mainly taught the British academic tradition. He was expelled in 1945. |

Rabindranath Tagore |
| |
Over one thousand poems; nearly two dozen plays and play-lets; eight novels; eight or more volumes of short stories; more than two thousands songs, of which he wrote both the words and the music; and a mass of prose on literary, social, religious, political, and other topics. On top of these, his English translations; his paintings; his travels and lecture-tours in Asia, America, and Europe; and his activities as educationist, as social and religious reformer, and politician. The life's work of Ravindranath Tagore is the accomplishment of a titan. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore - mystic, visionary, painter and Nobel laureate for literature- was India's grand old man of letters. But Tagore has been immortalised not only by his poetry but also by his paintings and his important contribution to Indian Art through Viswa-Bharati. |
