Amravati District with the rest of the Berar was assigned to the East India Company by the Nizam following the treaty of 1853. After this province was assigned to the Company, it was divided into two districts, South Berar with its headquarters at Hingoli with neighbouring region restored to the Nizam and North Berar was reconstituted into East Berar with headquarters at Akola. In 1864,the district of Yeotmal was separated from Amravati.In 1903, the Treaties of Assignment were superseded by an agreement under which the Nizam leased Berar to the Government of India in perpetuity. Berar was joined to the central provinces in 1903 to form the enlarged province of central provinces and Berar. With the recognition of States in1956,Amravati district ,along with other districts of Vidarbha region was included in the then Bilingual Bombay State.
Since the bifurcation of Bombay state into Maharashtra and Gujrat in 1960, Amravati,along with other districts of Vidharbha formed one of the districts of Maharashtra
Amravati Attractions
Chikaldara :In the epic Maharabharat Bhima killed the evil kichaka after a Herculean bout and threw him in to the valley. Hence the name Chikhaldara from kichakdara, the valley of kichak. Situated in the Satpuras at a height of 118m. Chikhaldara is a green and unspoilt hill station. The interesting excursions from here are Gavilgarh fort, Sakkar Talao, Bhim Kund, Shiva Shrine Van Udyan, Tribal Museum and Various Valley point LIKE, Devi, Monkey, Panchabal, long Hurricane and Prospect. The Melghat tiger reserve in near the Chikhaldara hill station and is a wealth of wild animals like sloth bear , Hyena, wild dog, Gaur, Sambar, Nilgai, Barking deer, four horned Antelope, wild boar and of course the magnificent Tiger.
Balapur :Balapur Taluka is located 23 km from Akola, the district headquarters. Here one will encounter an ancient fort, which was commissioned by Aurengzeb in 1690 and became an administrative centre under the Nizam.
Lonar :Here's a chance to see India's magnificent hypervelocity meterorite-impact crater. Lonar ranks 3rd amongst the worlds's five largest craters. Investigations reveal it to be around 40,000 Years old. Within the depression lies a saline lake. See the ruins of Temples constructed in Hemadpanti style, where Lord Narsimah, Ganesh, Renukadevi and Shiva were once worshipped. At the Villages around the cratem You can Listen to Many lagends about Lonar. A fascination sight is the presence of hundreds of peafowls which live inside the crater. Besides other resident and migratory birds, you can spot menitor lizards. Hanuman langoors, chinkaras and gazelles, if you're lucky.
Shegaon :Shegaon, a municipal town in Khamgaon Teshsil is famous for the Samadhi of Shri Gajanan Maharaja mystic saint as popular as Saibaba of Shirdi. Youll see a large number of pilgrims here, some coming from distant parts of Western Maharashtra, Vidarbha. Allegorically, Shegaon can be described as the Pandharpur of Vidarbha. Thousands of devotees pay their respects at the Samadhi every thousands of devotees pay their respects at the Samadhi every Thursday, which is regarded as a special day. See the temple of Shri Ram, also constructed in the premises of the shrine. If you visit Shegaon on Ram Navami in Chaitra and on Rushi Panchmi in Bhadrapada month of the Hindu Calendar, you can also attend the fairs held here on these occasions.
Sindkhed Raja :Sindkhed Raja, a small Taluka Place in Buldana district, situated 105 kms, away from district headquarters on the state highway No. 183, is known world wide as the birthplace of Rajmata Jijabai, the mother of the great Maratha warrior and king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja. There are a number of monuments in this small township, which owe their existence to Rajmata Jijabai and her father Lakhuji Jadhav. These monuments like Kalkat, Rang Mahal, Tomb of Lakhuji Jadhav, Place of Lakhuji Jadhav, ancient temple of Neekjantheshwar and Rameshwar have great heritage and architectural value.
Ridhpur :Ridhpur is situated in the Morshi Taluka in Amravati District on the Chandur Bazar- Morshi Road. Ridhpur is the pilgrimage center for the Mahanubhav cult and is also known as Kashi of Mahanubhav cult followers throughout the country. Thousands of pilgrims visit Ridhpur on Ashadhi Pourmima, Chaitra Pourmima and Govind Prabhu Jayanti (August- September). Besides this, the holy place is visited by pilgrims in great numbers daily.
Washim :Washim is a District head quarter and an ancient town. The town being connected not merely with recent saints but with classical deities. The most striking feature in the town in the Deo tank, flanked on one side by the temple of Venkateshwara Balaji and on another by that of Ramchandra. These all apparently date from the 18th century Washim in its religious aspect is called Watsa Gulma Kshetra, the sacred place of the gathering of Watsa and Legends about it are given in a Manuscript called Watsa Gulma Puran.
